Frequently Asked Questions

What is Mansa Advisory, and what makes it different from a conventional consulting firm?

Mansa Advisory is an African advisory practice specialising at the intersection of climate policy, just transition governance, political economy, and strategic communications. Unlike generalist consultancies, we operate as practitioner-advisors — we do not merely analyse policy landscapes, we actively shape them through multilateral platforms, civil society coalitions, and government-facing processes. Our insight comes from being inside the rooms where decisions are made.

Who do you work with?

We work with a diverse but deliberately selected client base: development finance institutions, multilateral agencies, governments, civil society organisations, non-profits, foundations, and private sector entities operating in Africa’s green, digital, and social economy. We also serve coalitions and multi-stakeholder bodies that require credible, independent facilitation and secretariat support.

What does “just transition governance” mean, and why is it your focus?

A just transition refers to the shift away from fossil fuel-dependent economies in a way that is equitable — protecting workers, communities, women, and marginalised groups from being left behind. Governance is the system of rules, institutions, and power relationships that determines whether that transition is actually just in practice. This is where most advisory firms are absent. Mansa Advisory specialises precisely here — helping organisations design, negotiate, and implement governance frameworks that are inclusive, accountable, and durable.

What is your geographic focus?

Our primary focus is the African continent, with particular depth in Southern Africa (SADC) and East Africa (EAC). We work across national and regional levels, and engage with continental bodies including the African Union and AfCFTA processes. Where relevant, we connect African policy priorities to global multilateral processes — including UNFCCC, G20, and UN frameworks.

Can Mansa Advisory support our organisation on a retainer basis?

Yes. For clients who require ongoing strategic counsel — including participation in policy processes, regular intelligence briefings, or sustained programme support — we offer structured retainer arrangements. These are particularly well-suited to development finance institutions, multilateral agencies, and foundations seeking a trusted African advisory partner embedded in the policy ecosystem.

How does Mansa Advisory approach coalition and multi-stakeholder work?

We believe that durable change requires broad ownership. Our approach prioritises stakeholder mapping, inclusive convening, and governance design that gives all participants — including civil society, women’s organisations, and frontline communities — meaningful roles and accountability mechanisms. We have direct experience facilitating national-level coalitions and designing the legal and operational frameworks that make them functional.

What is the firm’s relationship to civil society versus government versus the private sector?

We are an independent advisory practice. We are not an advocacy organisation, a government agency, or a corporate lobbyist. This independence is our most valued asset — it allows us to facilitate honestly across sectors and to provide clients with counsel that is not constrained by institutional interest. We have active working relationships across all three sectors and are trusted by each precisely because we are not captive to any of them.

Does Mansa Advisory work on funding and resource mobilisation?

Yes. We assist clients in structuring programmatic proposals, developing workplans and institutional frameworks that meet donor requirements, and positioning organisations for access to climate finance, development funding, and grant capital. We also advise on fiscal hosting arrangements and organisational structures appropriate for managing multi-funder programmes.

How do we engage Mansa Advisory?

Initial engagements typically begin with a scoping conversation to understand your challenge, timeline, and institutional context. From there, we propose a structured engagement — whether a discrete project, a facilitated process, or an ongoing retainer.
